I'm revisiting this thread, since we have a number of new people, and well, things change from time to time (I recall there was some desire to go pirate-hunting back when this was done, which is no longer the case). Feel free to vote the same as before, if you like, or to rethink entirely what you ultimately want—this will determine the overall scope of the story, so choose wisely. I should also remind you that this is not necessarily what your Character(s) want, but what you, the Player(s), want.FYI: by "Murphyism," I mean everything happens to them through no effort of their own (like Farscape, or Ripley in Aliens) Now, you must answer me these questions three, ere the...campaign...ye see [Edit: Added some, so now the joke doesn't work. Meh]. - What…is the nature of the empire/legacy you wish your character to leave?
- What…do you want your character to have saved?
- What…do you want your character to crusade for or against?
- How will your character have ultimately changed as a result
It has already been put forth that the "empire" should be business/merchant company-like in nature, but that could be narrowed down a bit. The empire/legacy will be the most prominent factor (due to the multiple votes), but the others will be worked in as well. There's no reason all these elements couldn't be related...in fact, they probably should be related...like building a legacy in the course of embarking on a crusade to save the [x]. The crusade could be against an individual, an organization, or a less-tangible "concept."

Player wants "Murphyism". I don't really. The problem with AJ (currently) is that I don't have a clear idea of his future goals as he, frankly, doesn't have very many. Everything that he's really wanted has either blown up in his face or failed miserably, so now all he simply wants to do is sort of be the "last man standing". Just a simple man trying to make his way through the universe. He's not greedy or even particularly interested in creating some sort of thriving business or something. His soul. Seriously, he's broken inside due to his past experiences, so all that's really holding him together is his sense of duty to his crew. Take that away ... and I don't have a clue what motivates him. I can totally see AJ Trent becoming the equivalent of a browncoat should circumstances warrant... Ultimately, I'd like him to gain a purpose, whether its crusading against pirates, becoming a Spectre for the Confederacy, or just having a kid or something.
