The son of a disgraced knight who turned to drink and recently died, Alain has taken up adventuring, ostensibly to redeem his family honor but in truth because he just doesn't want to turn into a drunk like his father. He is in search of a Cause. He's a well-meaning sort of guy who is pretty damned tough, fairly strong and certainly charismatic, but only of average wisdom. Alignment: Lawful Neutral. Class: Fighter Fighting Style: Sword & Board. Will specialize in bastard sword. Planned Progression: Plans to alignment shift to LG at 4th level, and then enter Paladin (nonspellcasting variant, CW) at 5th.

150gp exactly: bastard sword (slashing, primary), morningstar (bludgeoning/piercing), chain shirt, heavy wooden shield. Alas, poor Alain has no more money...

Alain would be a good fit for Rags to Royalty as the "lost prince John" with an (inevitable?) eye toward Dating Catwoman when the group invariably encounters the Nefarian Overlord's daughter (who really needs to look like this. Rowl. Perhaps with a side of Tragic Hero on the side and a dash of Be Careful What You Wish For (want to be a Knight? Okay ... but the job really freaking sucks...)

It occurs to me that, as a player, I should telegraph my intentions for the character. So ... intentions are pretty simple: Fighter through level 4 so I can get Weapon Spec (next couple of feats are likely going to be Shield Specialization (Heavy), then Shield Ward, then WpnSpc), and then I'm likely going to enter the Knight class from there on. So when we start nosing around 5th level (obviously not for a while) the active GM will need to keep that in mind since it stands to reason Alain will need to be actually knighted to be eligible for the class...

So I just noticed this but you know that Alain's profile pic is of him standing in front of the mirror checking out his own ass

So, I decided to do a Background using the StoryForge cards and this is what I got (obviously, on a few of the cards, I kept replacing them until I got something that tracked with the original background): 1. Mother - Identity. Knowing who someone really is becomes of utmost importance. 2. Father - Weakness. Either through physical weakness or a lack of conviction, failure is likely. 3. The Strength of His Parent's Relationship: Pain. Actions are driven purely by physical or emotional pain; either to put an end to the suffering or to strike out at the source. 4. The Problems Between his Parents: Obliviousness. The truth is missed, refuse, or ignored, no matter how dramatically it is revealed. 5. The Circumstances of Alain's Birth: Injustice. Justice is thwarted. The greedy and corrupt win the day, threatening all that is good and right. 6. Complications, if any. The Outlaw. Not all crimes hurt the innocent. In the eyes of the law, Robin Hood was a criminal, even though his cause was considered by many to be just. 7. The Universe's Influence on Alain or his Nature. The Mentor. This person might be a professor, a professional who takes an apprentice, or even a martial arts sensei. His or her gift is helping others with growth or training in a specific skill or craft. 8. Early Strengths. Youth. Enthusiasm and energy push one forward, driven by a naive and simplistic worldview. Mistakes are more likely, by youthful resilience will help one survive them. 9. Early Weaknesses. The Lovers. True love, all consuming, at its most beautiful, becomes the primary focus, sometimes to the exclusion of all else. 10. Education. Courage. Emotional fortitude is found. Even in the face of impending doom, the will to go on is within reach. 11. Belief Foundation. Law. This can be the idea of law, the institution of the legal system or the intervention of a law enforcement system. 12. Life Experience. The Outsider, Some people just don't belong. Whether it's a club, profession, tribe or culture, this person is clearly not included or welcome. 13. A Shaping Experience in Recent Times. Order. Order prevails. Even if things go poorly, they behave as expected. 14. An Experience That Left Scars. Defeat. Failure to achieve the goal results in loss and despair. 15. The State of the Character at the Beginning of the Story. Ignorance. One is missing important or correct information, which may lead to vulnerability.
With this in mind, I've revised my background slightly. The core elements are still intact - his father is a disgraced knight who turned to drink - but I have a better grasp of the character now:

What is this strange magic? How did you get sto ryforge cards? And how do I obtain them so I can play?

To track with the pic above and to be more of a "action star," I'm thinking of using this as Alain:

Good point. Upon further consideration, I will use Jared Padalecki instead - he is the right height...

My intent (Feats and Classes) after reviewing: - 2nd Level: ShieldSpec(Hvy) (PHB2) Retrain Toughness to Improved Shield Bash (PHB)
- 3rd Level: Agile Shield Fighter (PHB2)
- 4th Level: WpnSpc (PHB), CHA Bump. Alignment Shift to Lawful Good - I'm going to be setting the groundwork for this during my initial GM sequence, though it will be mostly in the background; given that the majority of his close friends are NG (Maia, Uzi and I believe WxMAN said Bruno would be NG), the assumption is that they will rub off on him. Because of them, he will likely focus more on the Good than the Law.
- 5th Level: Enter Paladin class. Use CW Variant - no spellcasting (because he doesn't have the Wisdom for it.)
- 6th Level: Shield Ward (PHB2)
- 8th Level: CHA bump
- 9th Level: Divine Shield (CW)
- 12th Level: ArmorSpec (Hvy) (PHB2), CHA bump
- 15th Level: Expanded Aura of Courage (HoB)
- 16th Level: CHA bump
- 18th Level: Improved Smiting (CD)
- 20th Level: CHA bump
Some of these feats may get shuffled around as necessary, but that's my plan...

Good point. Upon further consideration, I will use Jared Padalecki instead - he is the right height... Just a suggestion, but in my head I pictured Alain as being portrayed by Henry Cavill (but not when he had that stupid cropped haircut in Tudors). There's something about Padalecki that doesn't sit right with me. Maybe because he looks too...nice? Granted Cavill is a bit older (I don't know what age you're thinking for Alain) is only 6'2" but I think his rugged good looks and hard jawline could portray a LN character with a CHA of 15. blog.zap2it.com/kate_ohare/Tudors_Henry_Cavill_chainmail%207-21-2008%209-29-49%20AM.jpg

Oh ... good suggestion. I really like Cavill. And I found this pic a while back that I've always wanted to use a character... Plus? Cavil is Superman now, so another point in his favor.
