Creation-
The people of Elslayne believe that before creation, the universe was void of all things except for three siblings; two males, Lor and Mithas, and a female, Grantha. Now these siblings weren’t joined by blood per se, but siblings in the fact that they were the only things that existed in the universe. They were siblings of Being. Mithas and Grantha were both of quick mind and quick temper. When discussing every issue, they always seemed to be on opposite sides. They fought passionately, and loved passionately, and because of this they created six children; Karida, Glynis, Aelsblood, Moarn, Uluse, and Verlac. Lor was one to keep to himself. He never spoke and had eyes of alabaster. He would turn those eyes to the tempest that made up Mithas and Grantha, but he never interfered. Mithas, and Grantha seemed perfectly content to leave Lor to his own devices. Besides, he was never that interesting anyway. That is, until the day that Lor spoke. It was a simple phrase, but one that would change the way of Being. He simply told Mithas and Grantha that “You will be the creation of all.” Now, this filled each Being with pride, and they quickly started an argument over to whom Lor was speaking. One thing led to another and a cosmic conflict was soon taking place. Soon the unstoppable force hit the immovable object, and both Beings shattered into innumerable pieces and scattered themselves upon contact to the far reaches of the void. Lor surveyed what became of his siblings and spoke the word of Creation, their matter became the stars and planets and eventually held life. Lor fell silent after that, never speaking again, but always watching and observing. He left this new cosmos to Mithas’ and Grantha’s children.
Modern Day Religion-
Over the years, the religion of Elslayne has changed as most religions are want to do. It is believed that each Major God is a figurehead for ideals to live up to. Three of the siblings, Moarn, Uluse, and Verlac seemed to inherit their parent’s less than ideal traits. They are ruthless and bitter, and soon fighting broke out between the three. Uluse, the cleverest of the three, pitted Moan and Verlac against each other in an unending war. Moarn rules a land known as the Nine Gates. He delights in taking Elslaynians who do calculating crime, and banishes them to a gate, each one more horrible than the last. Verlac rules The Void, and will snatch up Elslaynians who enjoy crimes of passion or chaos. The Void is incredibly unpredictable. You may be burned one minute, or frozen the next. Each torment is as different as the last, but they are all terrible things to endure. Each brother snatches up Elyslanians to fight in their great army. It is believed one of these days the victor will turn his attention to Karida and the other gods, but for now they are content to fight each other.
Of course, this leaves Uluse to roam the world unhindered, promising people the impossible, and always coming out ahead in the end. This made Elslayne a dangerous place, for there was much to be feared. Thankfully, a gift of protection, it is said that Karida chose nine mortals to serve as her personal guard on earth. They were exceptional human beings that became even more exceptional after she Blessed them. Each one pledged an oath to her and as a result she invoke great power within them. Her paladins she referred to as her Sword, invoking a righteous wrath to purge the wicked from the world. Her clerics she called her Shield, willing to do anything to protect its citizens of the world. It is believed that the blood of the nine runs in the veins of their progeny, though after many generations, that line has been lost or diluted. When someone has done a great feat, they are referred to as Blessed, which means that they might as well be a descendant of Karida’s Nine.
Worship is often passive by nature. It is believed that the Major gods serve more as figure heads, for they do not demonstrate their presence or powers during modern times. Most of their presence is apparent in stories or fairy tales, usually involving a lesson to be learned. These are more popular with children than adults. There are those that claim that the major gods do make their presence known, but only to those that truly believe. They claim that is the ultimate test of the major gods, and that those who believe will be Blessed with powers similar to the Nine. There are small churches, or places of worship for those active followers, but there does seem to be a religious prejudice between the zealots and normal civilians.
Over time more gods were added to be guardians over certain aspects of a typical Elslaynian’s life. These became the minor gods or demi-gods, mortals that were blessed to guard and keep the integrity of an important aspect. These gods were more popular as they were more relatable to the people of Elslayne. Eventually asking for a blessing became a two part procedure, where you would ask a minor god for help and then ask the minor god to ask a major god for a blessing. It is now believed that the minor gods would be able to communicate with the major gods more easily as they have been favored by them, thereby making the major gods more approachable by the normal population.
Religion with other races- Few physical aspects of the gods are known due to the fact that most stories began by word of mouth. Over time, most races had very similar gods and goddesses but a few tweaks here and there to make them more relatable to that particular race. Most deities can easily be recognized no matter what race you are examining.
Afterlife- Elslaynians believe that you are destined to repeat a different version of your life many times over. Each one is a test to see if you are worthy enough to make it to The Great Rest. The Great Rest is your final eternal life where you would want for nothing. It takes a very long time to achieve The Great Rest, and you would be a very kind, enlightened, and wise individual. However, if you should turn wicked, then you are marked by either Verlac or Moarn. It is said when you die, they will take you to their realms where you will never escape again.
