For some more background info on the Iron Kingdoms, you can visit this site for more information on the Iron Kingdoms.
Also, here is the official IK Character Sheet.
The Iron Kingdoms falls into the "Steam Punk" genare. Think a High Fantasy setting with a technology setting of the Industrial Revolution. Trains operate on steam, powered by a magical engine. There are few "true" magical items. Most "Magical" items use Arcane Acumalators (batteries) that are recharged by magic.
The game world, Caen, is one of the "Far" planes. This means it's not directly touched by the Outer Planes. To reach Caen you must travel through the Astal or Ethereal planes. It also means that Divine Magic works a bit differently in the Iron Kingdoms. As it is very difficult for the Gods to reach Caen, only three actual Dieties exist.
The continent ya'll will be adventuring on is Western Immoren. It's a large place populated by lots of Humans and some non-humans. There are several "races" of man that hail from different parts of Immoren. There are the Dwarfs, called the Rhulic Folk, the Elves, Iosan (Summer) and Nyss (Winter). Goblins are a race that has embraced technology. And then there are the Ogren (ogres) that are a somewhat Primative culture that values Honor above all else (think old China and Samauri). The last race I'll talk about are the Trollkin. They have evolved into a tribal people that wodner the continent. Though primative, they do have a culture and intelligence, and are just now gaining acceptence into the Western Kingdoms.
Arcane magic is viewed with some distrust and some groups (The Church of Menoth) actively seek out and eliminate Spell Casters.
The Ultimate Arcane Spell Caster is the Warcaster. They wield increadible powers and can use Warjacks, mighty Iron Constructs fueled by magic and running on steam that are prehaps the most powerful war machines ever created.
Oh yeah, and there are guns...
