Service Unto Death. Three words that make up the motto of House von Attre, one that pledges their lives to the reigning king to protect and serve. The von Attre men are raised to enter active duty in the military or royal guard. Their families are large in order to make up for loss of life, for battles can be long and bloody. Daughters are expected to marry well and produce many offspring to keep their numbers strong. House von Attre is its own machine, operating with smooth efficiency due to the profound respect of its own law and order. Men will be born, they will serve the king, and then they will die. Nothing could bring more honor to such a noble house.
With such self-sacrifice and responsibility comes many benefits, for kings do not forget those that serve them. The von Attres are held with great respect at court. Many have served as Captain of the guard or a royal advisor, and are sure to always have the King’s ear in one matter or another. This has caused quiet rumblings from other houses, saying that the von Attre motto should really be Service Until One Is Served. For while the von Attres have never made a direct grab for the throne, being the King’s favored house resulted in immense benefits. Some have even dared to think that they are really the puppet masters pulling strings to suit their will. While no direct accusations have ever been made, it is not uncommon for whispers to reverberate off the castle walls. A von Attre is not immune to cool glances and prickly demeanors from other people.
Grace Diane von Attre is the favorite daughter of Sir Gregory, who has since retired from the military and now oversees the family’s iron mines in order to supply the king with von Attre steel. Her uncle is now General of the royal army, as well as her grandfather a royal advisor. She had six brothers; four currently serving active duty, while two were cut down in combat. Grace is the only daughter and the apple of her father’s eye, which is precisely why her father didn’t immediately throw her out when she came to him pleading that she couldn’t marry the man that he had hand selected for her. She had always been an perfectexample of a daughter; dutiful, respectful, and kind, which is why Sir Gregory decided that a wedding can be put off for a few more seasons. However, Grace is of age, and so he deemed that she must serve.
With few options, Grace learned the art of healing, and served as a medic for soldiers who were injured or had fallen. She cleaned wounds, sawed off limbs, stinted blood flow, and quieted screams. She worked tirelessly, until those screams would drown out all thoughts at night before she went to bed. If only she could prevent those screams. If only she could prevent their deaths, and see them home. If only she could aid in prevention rather than to pick up the pieces after destruction. If only she could protect those that needed protecting. If only...if only. It was then Grace had decided; her mind was made up. She would learn to shepherd the light of the world, and in turn watch evil burn.
