Ok guys. Time to start work on this case so i can make some stuff to support it. But some important notes. I DONT WANT ANY BACK STORY POSTED HERE PUBLICALLY! keep it on the down low. I'm confused: my character is up already ... do I need to create a new one? Dude, you're going to need to dial down your expectations there. None of us are professional actors...

Note that I said "professional." I should play something where if I am gone for weeks on end it won't negatively affect the game.... so.... captain? ;-) Could also maybe get away with being a walk-on security or ops character ala Miles O'Brien when he showed up in TNG. So he's available when appropriate (e.g., when you're there.) TVTropes calls that a Mauve Shirt...

* @ Xenocore: Interesting idea - open the game in media res (ala DS9) with the CO dying horribly so the XO has to step up and take over? So I end up playing the captain when the replacement finally shows up? I dont mind doing the senario. but I still want a PC captain. We can have him show up later, and whoever is playing them just runds a supporting character till they arrive. I can work with that.

I note that both Nelson Halsey (Giger) and Trar Krer (WxMAN) are listed as ChEng - AFAIK, we can only have one of those so we're going to have tryouts... But seriously, if WxMAN's schedule is going to be as whacked out as he fears, it might make sense to have Trar be a "Mauve Shirt" who is Nelson's #2 in engineering and shows up as infrequently as College Man. (IRL, the makeup people have some problems getting his face on the actor.) Drop him to LtCdr and move on. Alternately, Halsey could be the LtCdr who is effectively running the engineering department because Trar is ROAD (retired on active duty)? No, that doesn't work - my character would have Trar transferred. Maybe, since Trar is noted as close to retirement, he's pushing all of the work of running engineering onto Nelson (again, presuming the latter is a LtCdr) with the mindset of getting him ready to take over as ChEng? I think this one makes the most sense...

I was just going off the chart of character "assignments"...
It was suggested I don't play an enlisted engineer for when I'm gone so they could be NPC'd, but thinking about it - there doesn't to be any true difference between him being chief engineer.. both could be easily slotted in and out or NPC'd as required.
I was trying to just take whatever was left and be able to be slotted in and out (luckily that is generally easy in Star Trek)... I didn't realize Giger had laid claim to Eng... I'm not sure if it is worth being an underling at all though... I'm not particularly familiar with the system in general, but typically overlapping skills are a good deal not fun to play as you feel as though you are always playing 2nd fiddle and may as well not be there.
I can always do something else? Weapons/Helms... same problem of my (unfortunate) lack of knowing how this semester will play out, but I'm hopeful this may be a "light" semester, and I'm fine with being NPC'd as need be.

I thought I heard you back down from ChEng, but then, I've heard things before that weren't really happening…
I didn't claim ChEng until I "heard" you back down (though I kinda-sorta leaned that way). And anyway, my character isn't intended to be the McGyver-type, but more of a manager+designer, so their skillsets won't overlap so much.
But I'm not really married to ChEng either, so we could flip a coin at this point.

So here's the thing... I'm using the character creator and b/c I don't have time to read the rulebook, I'm not seeing anything about helm or weapons.... so I'm kinda clueless as to what is and is not important and how to properly build a character to be good at the things he needs to be good at....

So, since apparently helmsman and weapons officer is not a legal position - what are my actual options so I'm not just sitting behind the wheel of the ship doing nothing as the only non senior officer

Chief of Security is probably a valid option, I'd think - you'd work with the XO and probably handle the shoosting of the ship weapons during space combat. We could probably just NPC the helmsman since, as you point out, he just drives the boat...
ETA: You could replace the Ops Manager as well ... although to be honest, I've never actually be quite clear on what they do...

Hmm. The Akira is sort of a carrier, so you could keep the Tellarite helm/weps guy if he's sort of a fighter jock (assault shuttle?)

Can Xeno give a reasonable list of valid combos since Helms/Weapons is apparently not valid - and now that I think of it, not ideal as I think in "ideal" jobs should have an on-ship/off-ship component, and helms/weapons are both on-ship.

A lot of the series' characters had no purpose off the ship as part of their official duties but were still able to contribute. It's really a matter of how useful the character is on his own merits.
As far as "weps vs helm" goes—he's chief pilot, not the only pilot.
