Setting:
The Fallout universe is set in an alternate history of the United States immediately following WWII. One of the bigger technological differences was the lack of the modern transistor, and so the Atomic Age was ushered in on the back of vacuum tubes and atomic physics, which became the cornerstone of scientific progress. From there boxy-advanced robots, nuclear-powered cars, and directed-energy weapons became the hallmarks of the 1950’s right next to pink Formica countertops, The Jitterbug, Cold War paranoia, and apple pie. In this age, retro-futuristic computers are made possible with vacuum tubes, the buildings are created with an Art Deco eye, weaponry has a Flash Gordon flare, the science is always Mad(!), and the few vehicles that remain still have the fins and chrome of America’s favorite decade.
Background:
International dispute is at an all-time high as a time known as the Resource Wars broke out after a decade of tension. The European Commonwealth broke down after infighting regarding military conflicts with the Middle East in order seize control of the last of the petroleum resources. The UN ultimately disbands after many years of discord. Strained by the lack of fossil fuels, China becomes more belligerent in trade talks with the US, and would ultimately invade Alaska in 2066. This invasion forced the US to unveil its new powered combat armor, which would turn the tide of the war. The US invaded China on its own soil, which would cause the Chinese to abandon Alaska in order to protect its homeland. In order to further protect its asses, the US ultimately annexed Canada. However, the US is far from at peace with its victory. The world’s supply for oil has been exhausted and free flowing fusion power is still on the horizon. Civil panic and revolt is inevitable as power and food shortages spur the people to rally against the government. The military is mobilized to control the riots, though many protesters get killed. It is a time of great unrest.
The year is 2077. This is the year of the Great War. To this day, no one knew who launched the first nuclear assault. All that is known is that it only took two hours to devastate the entire human race. Those that could survive took place in fallout shelters or bunkers. In the coming months, life would cease to exist as we know it. Plants and animals died, the lands became baron and desolate. In the coming years, the world began to heal, but the scars that remained would mean that it would never be the same. The world became a wasteland, where mutated creatures roamed freely, and humans who could barely be called human struggled to survive day after day. The lucky few had places reserved in one of the 122 large, government constructed bunkers called Vaults.
The day is October 23, 2077. Oklahoma City is one of the last bastions of power as oil resources dwindle down to nothing. It is considered a secondary golden age, as people that held respect, power, and resources flow in as a final power grab to stem the tide of the inevitable. Once overlooked as a city of limited interest, the government now used its finite resources to push forth grants to entice companies to take on constructing privatized vaults. Representatives of The Vault-Tech corporation were contracted to act as consultants and potentially oversee operations. While the popular opinion of these vaults remain dubious, this provides one last shred of hope for a city that would have otherwise been overlooked.
Oh, and war. War never changes.
