Before the War, "Buddy" was a local musician who played rock and roll in various bars with his guitar. His thing was being a Buddy Holly imitator who played at the Riverwind. After the War, something clearly went wrong with him as he began carrying a samurai sword he obtained from somewhere...

This is sort of what I'm thinking about the character background:
Prior to the war, CHARLES "BUD" HOLLIS was a struggling guitarist and impersonator who specialized in the historical "Buddy Holly" (with whom he felt that he shared a kind of kinship to. After a series of failed attempts to secure a recording contract (mostly due to the fact that his style of music was no longer in vogue), Bud fell into a long-term gig at the Riverwind Casino where he did his impersonation thing four nights a week. Yeah, it kind of sucked but it paid the bills and gave him plenty of time to focus on continuing to try and hit the 'big time.' He even made a couple of friends, including the wealthy owner of the casino who, for some reason, adored Bud's music style.
And then, the war broke out.
Following the war - and this is presuming he goes into cryo in a vault, thanks to his friend the casino owner - he emerges a different person, possibly due to something going a little wrong with his tube. Now thoroughly convinced that he IS Buddy Holly reborn and that somewhere, Out There in the wasted lands, is a Song that can restore the world to the way it was, his delusion(s) disturbed some of his fellow Vault-Dwellers enough that they began to subtly encourage him to venture Out There to find that Song...

Were you still on board with having the dog "Bones", which eventually becomes the vessel for Dr. Hundmeister, be yours? My thought was it joined you in the rush to the vault, and cryo-genically frozen in one of the many spare cryo-tubes (not everyone on the manifest made it to the vault in time).

Heh. With his recent improvement, Bud's Strength has improved to d8. He removed his shirt to get clean and holy crap, dude is ripped. Pre-war genetics and all.
Regarding in-game discussion re: Bud & the Brotherhood, at the moment, yes, he is interested in potentially becoming one of them because, at the moment, they honestly appear the most civilized to his eyes. As time passes, however, and he gets to know them better, it is entirely possible that they will end up becoming the Peacekeepers to his John Crichton (with Swan turning into his Aeryn Sun? LOL ) Continuing that analogy, this means there's probably a Scorpius in the Brotherhood ... unless Doc Bones is the Scorpy in this analogy!
