Was browsing the GURPS boards and stumbled upon Campaigns, Setting or Stuff you've wanted to try with GURPS! which has a lot of really neat ideas but I honestly think this one just blows my mind:

The Red Planet beckons

It is 1965 and the Race to the Moon has taken a dramatic turn. Mariner 4 has orbited Mars and sent pictures back to Earth. The world is stunned when the pictures show ruins of what are beyond a doubt, artificial structures. The structures appear to be from a civilization was in advance of ours, but no one will know for sure until Humans reach Mars.

The superpowers change the goal from reaching the Moon to getting to Mars before the other side does. Neither side knows for sure what is there, but neither wants to take the chance of letting the other side get there first.

The PCs can be anything from Astronauts training for the trips to Mars, to scientists working on the equipment to be used to get to Mars, to politicans working on the getting public support behind the effort, to secret agents trying to slow down the other side's efforts.

Man, a game like that really sounds awesome. There's just so much kickass potential ... want to play hardcore Cold War spies? There's a place for that. How about "space cowboys" riding the edge of oblivion as they hurtle toward the red planet? Gotcha covered. What about a political brinksmanship game? So much possibility ...

A Call to Arms by Alan Dean Foster.

In the near future, Earth is visited by scouts from an alliance of alien races called the Weave. The Weave are fighting a desperate war against the Amplitur, who have Mind Control abilities and have brainwashed entire species into being happy slaves. The scouts discover that Earth's inhabitants are faster, stronger, tougher, and fiercer than every other sapient species, bar none. They're also the only species with the ability to resist the Psychic Powers of the Amplitur. So, the discovery of humanity marks a critical turning point in their war to remain free. Unfortunately, humans are feared by the other sympathetic alien species precisely for those qualities and the uncomfortable question comes up that if they win the war, what will happen to human/alien relations then?

Amusing tropes on the Series Page for this:

Death World: Earth is considered a Death World by the aliens, whose worlds all have low gravity, low tectonics, practically no axial tilt (preventing violent weather) and few true predators. The average unskilled couch-potato human is more than a match for their trained soldiers. Trained Earth military personnel, especially special-operations types, are essentially incarnate demigods of death by alien standards.

And

Humans Are Cthulhu: Compared to every other known intelligent species modern-day humans are unbelievably fast and strong and savage, both physically and psychologically (none of the other species is particularly good at the concept of "waging war"). The Weave ultimately decide they have no choice but to recruit humanity to their cause anyway, knowing that once the war is won they'll have a very dangerous situation on their hands trying to figure out how to live safely with their allies.
