Just a long overdue update here: I am currently working of a potential continuation of the campaign and have a number of ideas that I'm toying with in regards to the campaign's direction. To wit: - First, it's become pretty clear that this isn't a group in which the rulership of a region is a high priority and having the characters "settle" in the Valley was obviously a misstep. Hence, I'll be rectifying that in the first "adventure".
- That said, this is also not a group really geared toward the Leadership feat so characters who were given that feat for free (Ashlyn - if Denee rejoins us - and Cyrus) will be losing those bonus feats.
- I anticipate the Company actually getting involved in the ongoing War (against the githyanki so expect bloodshed in the immediate future...
All of that said, what are the sort of things that you would want to see in the revised campaign? PCs will be leaving the Vale and going East and into The War. Plus, it might be a good idea to have thoughts about a secondary character in the event that your current character dies. As it stands, the group make-up consists of: - Cyrus, son of Foote. Human Monk 11/Sorceror 1/Kensai 2
- Gilthoron, son of Glorthoron. Elf (wood) Fighter 4/Ranger 5/Order of the Bow Initiate 5.
- Nival, son of Drammel, aka the Thriceborn and Once-Elven. Human Magister 14.
Since Gilthoron actually expended a feat for Leadership, he will keep that feat but a second Cohort (probably Kheldane's healer) will replace the Followers. There are three PCs who will probably become NPCs since the players are no longer attending:

So ... nobody has any thoughts? And an update on characters: Kim will be playing a female human Fighter 12. I'm going to recommend that she actually be the female merc that the Company let go while in the Pomarj (who was Lawful Neutral at the time)...

Aerial boarding action, between multiple ships (since I know flying ships are in our future). More flying stuff...with 'griffs or whatnot. Flying fortress siege? Gil=Batman (Griff=Tumbler?); orks are a cowardly and superstitious lot... More Greyhawk celebs; maybe some non-wizards (Obviously, I'm wanting to get off the ground a bit) ;D

Daniel about summed it up. With a little tweaking ;D Say a little flying on the back of a Dragon While fighting some of the bad dragons. That would be sweet.I Know what you are thinking and I know this is no Dragon Lance. But hey what can I say As far as a Caleb. I'd like an appearance by St.Cuthbert in a no interference way with us mere mortals in awe Perhaps while an epic fight ensues

I think kim wants to see Daniel play an effective character. ;D
Me...all I need is a montage. (Does this mean I'm going to have to ditch my plans to elliminate the rest of the party? You know...just in case)

Nope. Feel free to plot the rest of the party's demise ... as long as I'm let in on it... Right. A revised list of characters consists of: - Cyrus, son of Foote. Human Monk 11/Sorceror 1/Kensai 2
- Gilthoron, son of Glorthoron. Elf (wood) Fighter 4/Ranger 5/Order of the Bow Initiate 5.
- Nival, son of Drammel, aka the Thriceborn and Once-Elven. Human Magister 14.
- Kim's Character (Name TBD), Human Fighter 12
According to Daniel, Denee has indicated that she will be rejoining us so Ashlyn Meadowgrove, Elf (wood) Fighter 11/Skylord 1 may also be part of the group. Obviously, Tom will also probably join us unless the game takes place at a time when he is deployed; I have no idea what kind of character he would want to play. Daniel has also informed me that Robert has recently resurfaced and, once his schedule clears up, would like to rejoin the group. This could lead to some minor problems as his character Oswulf has ostensibly “died” in the campaign, although I might be able to play around and bring him back. To wit: the following is a list of the sort of things that the Party has expressed interest in seeing: - Aerial boarding action, between multiple ships (since I know flying ships are in our future).
- More flying stuff...with 'griffs or whatnot.
- Flying fortress siege?
- Gil=Batman (Griff=Tumbler?); orks are a cowardly and superstitious lot...
- More Greyhawk celebs; maybe some non-wizards
- a little flying on the back of a Dragon While fighting some of the bad dragons.
- an appearance by St.Cuthbert in a no interference way with us mere mortals in awe Perhaps while an epic fight ensues.
- Apparently, all Nival needs is a montage so it looks like he won't be gaining any levels any time soon...

Bumping this in the hopes of getting feedback which then leads to inspiration... Hence, I'll be rectifying that in the first "adventure".

There are three PCs who will probably become NPCs since the players are no longer attending: Since it is unlikely that either Denee or Kim will be rejoining us (unless I'm not aware of something), I'm not planning for either player to join us. Depending upon when I resume this campaign (providing I can resume it), Tom might or might not be present and I have no idea what kind of character he would play. I also have no idea what sort of character Josh would play... We discussed on Friday night the possibility of Gavin playing Tarrant, Nival's apprentice, with the plan being that SQ would be responsible for teaching him how to play a mage; obviously, there are XP issues to resolve, because, in the time it'll take most of you to level once, he will gain five or six levels and that would defeat the purpose of being "trained." I would like to tie Tarrant's experience to Nival's in some fashion, to reflect his instruction, but it's going to be very dangerous for a Rogue1/Magister0... To wit: the following is a list of the sort of things that the Party has previously expressed interest in seeing: - Aerial boarding action, between multiple ships (since I know flying ships are in our future).

Remember that a PC may only gain enough exp to gain a single level per session, so you could attempt to explain it that way. This may result in a lot of lost exp on Gav's part, but I think in the end it would be ok.
As for what I want to see, I still want to see a kick ass wizard duel, and I think I know how it could be accomplished.
Most of the really badass wiz duel that you see take place between high level wiz's, so now we know of ways to accomplish the task at hand. It's less about game mechanics, and more about the fact that we are playing them not wrong, but a little lacking in the thought area.
Spell selection is the KEY and knowing what the wizard does for a living helps.
Your standard curmudgeon living in a library would have no use for mast metamagic feats, but a battlecaster would NEED them, specifically for dueling.
The most important of wich would be Quicken Spell. A dueling wizard would use this most of the time on Defensive spells as reactionary castings.
This is just my thought. I would like to try it out at least. It would lengthen the duel a little, and I like the idea.
Just a thought really.

Remember that a PC may only gain enough exp to gain a single level per session, so you could attempt to explain it that way. This may result in a lot of lost exp on Gav's part, but I think in the end it would be ok. But still, if he received regular XP, that would basically amount to him leveling every session for about a month and a half. How can he learn what it's like to play a wizard/magister if he's suddenly overwhelmed with dozens of spells? Do you see my boggle? As to the spell dueling thing, I remain fairly convinced that D&D really isn't geared toward that. Pit two characters of Nival's level against one another with identical spells, and whichever of them wins the initiative wins the duel. It's a Rd1, Bob casts disintegrate ... if he misses the attack roll or John makes the saving throw, John might live long enough to do the same thing. I actually think it will basically come down to description and probably a bit more cooperation between players & GM. Say, Nival is fighting the Mirror Universe Nival (complete with evil goatee), and MU Nival uses disintegrate. Upon making the saving throw, Nival instead describes how he defeated the spell instead of just "I beat the DC 20-esq save." Something like "I brandish my staff and deflect the lethal beam into a nearby tree!" The GM could then adjudicate something cool, like "And the deflected ray slices through the tree, causing it to topple to the ground!" In fact, I'm going to try and do that sort of thing in McN's game with Mazrim... Remember with Quicken Spell, use of that feat takes up higher level spell slots. But High Level Wizard Duel is noted...

On that note: The Quintessential Druid II (I have the .pdf) has an entire chapter dedicated to the "look" of magic, and ways to enhance descriptions to that end. For instance, what I wanted to do with my druid was to go with an "animal theme"; an example would be that Flaming Sphere was to have the appearance of a boar running around and charging the enemy…don't remember much else off the top of my head. If both the GM and the Player(s) use this (or similar) system, it could add a great deal of color to the magic usage.

Okay, I have some questions for the crew.
First, I need to know about Leadership and followers. Originally, Daniel was the only player who expended an actual feat for Leadership, and since the players seemed utterly and completely indifferent toward actually being leaders, I decided to pull back from putting the Company in leadership positions. Thus, I took back the bonus Leadership feats I handed out to a couple of players (and that retraction stands, by the way), and decided that Gilthoron could take over a second cohort to make up for the fact that he wouldn't have followers.
However, Josh's character ("Karick") has picked up the Leadership feat, and his backstory indicates a desire to be a Leader of Men. Now I would feel ... wrong if I allowed him to get Followers yet took Gilthoron's away from him, so I need to know what the party consensus is.
If you guys decide that you do want to deal with Leadership and Followers, be aware that I will require a player with the Leadership feat to act like a leader. Such a character needs to be proactive, and not a quiet guy who sits back and doesn't say much. (cough*Josh*cough) You probably will not begin the game with Followers (or, in Gil's case, will lose the ones you have), but there will be opportunities later in the game to begin acquiring hangers-on.
Also, for characters who pick up the Leadership feat, there are going to be some other requirements. You need to have a Goal (like all great Leaders have).
Second, I'd like all PCs to have at least some minor goal (of which I need to be informed, secretly if you wish).

www.drlgraphics.com/images/Thumbnail Pics/D&D-ThoronimStandard.jpg[/img]Long live the Thoronim! As to the character's goals: I can't find where I posted it originally (got deleted, maybe?), but I had that vision of Gil (via Orolonwë) forming a "samurai" order, dedicated to the perfection of archery and honor (and killing orcs ;D ).

|
Post by Rigil Kent on Sept 16, 2007 20:03:18 GMT -6
That tells me exactly nothing. Can you be more specific? I have a problem with that in that it means Gil is not a leader, but rather being led around by his nose by Orolonwë. What are Gil's goals? Not Orolonwë's goals, but Gil's.
|
|
|
Post by Gigermann on Sept 17, 2007 9:37:29 GMT -6
Gil was always a two-dimensional character, and as such has no real purpose other than "blood-soaked revenge" for the disappearance of his father & mother (I don't remember the circumstances exactly), and in specific, the hunting down of Mögnash. When I (the Player) decided to make some adjustments to the Character, I decided that the best way to affect the changes I wanted was to introduce Orolonwë as a "guiding hand." He is the catalyst for those changes, and is required for them to happen. It is true that Orolonwë is "manipulating" Gil to a great extent, in a benign sense, in an attempt to aid him in finding a true purpose and reaching his true potential. This is how I designed the situation, and that's how I intended to continue. The only other "personal goal" for Gil is to restore his standing with his immediate family, and to provide for and leave a legacy for them. The "order" is a goal that Orolonwë is cultivating in Gil, and he is teaching him how to lead his men. By design, these goals will become Gil's in time, but are not yet.

I have no problem having to work to get followers. It makes sense. I wasn't expecting to have followers at the beginning anyway since I'm only now starting to come into my own and not just a commander serving under Kheldane.

Post by Rigil Kent on Sept 30, 2007 13:40:19 GMT -6
Next question then: Cohort. As it stands right now, I allowed Gilthoron to have two cohorts (Orolonwe and Miyatar) since there weren't going to be any followers. Since followers are going to be present, though, that means he should not have two cohorts (unless ... hmmm ... if Gigermann gets the Improved Cohort feat (or whatever it's called), I'll let him have both...)
So, do you, zenwolf, have any idea about the sort of cohort you want?

|
Post by zenwolf on Oct 1, 2007 18:13:00 GMT -6
Well I was thinking of having his son be his cohort. I am not really planning on him being around all the time. Most of the time Karick wants to keep his son out of harm's way. His son(CG fighter),Cailas, has lived for the past 10 years with his uncle. His uncle(LN leaning towards evil) is in some position of leadership.(mayor, duke, whatever.) The uncle trained Cailas in the ways of war.
However, Cailas eventually learned how the uncle was treating his people and so he secretly began to fight against his uncle. All the while still learning what he could from his uncle. Eventually the uncle discovered what his nephew had been doing. The uncle did not kill him for he feared reprisal from his brother. Instead he sent Cailas back to Karick on some pretext. He told Cailas that if he ever comes back,no matter what the reason, he would kill him without a second thought. There will be a lot of tension between Cailas and Karick for the reasons I stated in the background for Karick. Cailas is slightly resentful of his father's absence. He fought his best to save his family and was rewarded by being shunned by his father.
I mainly took the leadership feat because it made sense for the character not just because I wanted to control a bunch of people and essentially have a second character. I think that this cohort makes sense. If it doesn't make sense to you let me know any ideas you have.

Dude, it's your character so it's up to you. That said, I really like the ideas you have here (would be nice if some of the other slackers in the group provided as much...) I'm going to suggest Shiboleth in the Gran March as the location of Karick's brother for several reasons. One, Karick's previous "lord" (as in, prior to Kheldane) was a paladin named Sir Talamar, and he was from Shiboleth. Two, Shiboleth's baron is kind of evil (LE, actually), and we can easily say that Karick's brother is part of the baron's circle of peers. I'll further suggest that Karick's brother be Lord Gocelin, which would make Karick of the powerful (if distrusted) House Rholgran there. Since Karick is not landed, it seems pretty obvious that he is the junior son. What class(es) were you thinking of Cailas being? Fighter/Rogue, perhaps? If he speaks elven, I could work him pretty quickly... Maximum level of the cohort will be 11th (your level minus 2), and your Leadership score is currently [13 +4 (Cha Bonus) =17 -1 (Moves Around a Lot) -1 (Recruits cohort of different alignment) = 15. A leadership score of 15 makes you eligible for 20 1st level followers, 2 2nd levels, and 1 3rd level. (Note: Followers begin at 1st level as NPC classes like Warriors or Commoners). HOUSE RHOLGRAN Racial Make up: Mostly of Suel extraction with Oeridian blood mix. Descendants of the Suel House Rhola (this would make them mostly light-skinned and light-haired (Sueli) with some dark-haired showing up (Oeridian), which matches the pic of Liam we're using. Location: Barony of Shiboleth, City of Shiboleth House Leader: Lord Bodwin, Baron of Shiboleth Other Nobles:- Lady Anicia Rholgran
- Lady Margeria Rholgran
- Lord Gocelin Rholgran
- Lord Alward Rholgran
Knights:- Sire Delran Rholgran
- Sire Farvee Cappe
- Sire Firmin Coddyng
- Sire Ranulph Rholgran
Wealth: 11,000gp per annum # Freeman and Serfs Sokeman - 100 # Ceorl - 3,000 in the lands around Shiboleth # Cotter - 700 Military Militia of 800 Industries Cloth, dyes and exports Description * Being the major exporters to southern Sheldomar Valley has made House Rholgran one of the richest Families in Gran March. They are also one of the least trusted. House Rholgran was the last to join the Nobles confrontation with Keoland. Baron Ornereus Rhola refused to join the nobles believing that Gran March should remain dependant on Keoland. After a clandestine meeting of his brother Gervase and Lord Soloim (of Neholin) had Ornereus removed from power. Only later to have be found dead in the Rushmoors. * The exact sequence of events are cloudy but historians have felt that Ornereus was murdered by his brother and the other houses agreed to turn a blind eye for Gervase's support but no evidence of this can be found. Gervase followed the Lord Solomin's lead and changed the name of his family to Rholgran take on the Gran of Gran March to prove his allegiance. Gervase also sent emissaries to Keoland promising to remain loyal to House Rhola and to advocate for Keoland in Gran March. News of this caused uproar among the other Nobles but once Keoland succumbed to other barons' wishes and rebuked House Rholgran, it was reluctantly accepted back into the fold. Neither House Rholgran nor the other baron released that it was on Lord Solomin's advice that Keoland rebuke Rholgran to maintain peace and to show that it was concerned for the well being of Gran March. * After the death of King Tavish the IV, House Rhola of Keoland sought some reconciliation with House Rholgran, which achieved some measure of success. Today the Houses are on friendly terms and are major drivers of trade between the two regions. After the unexplained death of Gervase the House move into Shiboleth completely claiming the old Manor to be cursed. Today they control much of the centre and north of the city. * Lord Alward, Bodwin's brother, is the mayor of Shiboleth. Cousins to Bodwin, Sire Ranulph is the bailiff and Sire Delran is Captain of the guard. Lord Baron Bodwin is Honorary head of the Cloth Guild while his wife Lady Anicia has the same title of the Dyer's guild. His sister Lady Margeria is an accomplished trader and has earned the reluctant respect of many of the merchants of Shiboleth. There is not much that can go on in Shiboleth without Lord Bodwin hearing about it. He has his own small group of spies with in the city. He has heard rumours of the Black Willow guild operating in Hookhill but he has not yet learned that they have courting his sister, Margeria, persistently. Lord Gocelin, Bodwin's cousin, is the house's representative in Hookhill. * The House's relationship with Hookhill is strained. Bodwin hates Lord Lyndus and considers him a meddlesome fool. He does have a cordial relationship with the Commandant who he knew when Magnus was stationed in Shiboleth. Lord Bodwin cannot understand why Vrianian had need of such a man as Lord Lyndus but has agreed not to discus this with the Commandant as they have agreed to disagree about Lord Lyndus and his station. * In truth the Commandant's advisor Lord Lyndus has come close to uncovering Bodwin ever increasing alliance with House Rhola in Keoland. These talks appear to nothing more then about trade and the movement Shiboleth goods beyond the Sheldomar Valley. In fact they are about helping House Rhola reacquire the crown of Keoland and Rholgran reward for such support. * Sire Farvee and Firmin patrol the Rholgran lands west and east of the city respectively. Farvee is pressed more often by creatures and humanoid excursions from the Rushmoors and has a larger portion of the Militia then Firmin. * The Freeman and serfs outside the city have an easier life then those within its walls. All of the Cotters are inside the city. * The House sells the best cloth and dyes in the Valley. They are heavy sought after in the great city of Greyhawk.

Okay. A few more things.
1. First, here is some extra background that I forgot to mention earlier. Karick has a younger sister (34) who was married off to some other (kingdom, state, whatever they are called in greyhawk). She was married to one of the lesser nobles of that family. She is a very conniving woman and has been trying for years to get her husband in a position of power. She would do anything in order to achieve that.
2. Followers. Namely the type of followers I am hoping to recruit. I am not really looking for warrior types. Well maybe one or two, but in general I am looking at my followers being more of an entourage. People to take care of my horse or whatever mount I have at the time. A couple of pages maybe but most importantly I would like to have a squire and a herald.
3. Returning to the spirit of the thread, I would like to throw out some ideas of what I would like to see. I would be interested in seeing at some point some courtly intrigue. Karick would be uncomfortable in this setting but it is something he will need to deal with if he ever hopes to be a person of power. Also I think it would be cool if we could have a jousting tournament.
Thats all I have to say for now

Cool. At least someone is giving me ideas... NOTE: A lot of this stuff won't initially come into play 'cause of the location, but I will try to get you guys back here so we can play around with this background... Let's see ... I'm gonna say that she married Duke Cedrian of House Neheli ... this is in Dilwych in Keoland to the south, but tracks with the concept of her seeking power. That'll be up to you as I'll probably have you build the followers as you acquire them... I'll see what I can do. That could be a little more difficult, given the almost "all out war" that's starting, but not impossible, I suppose. I'll try ...

Okay, I built him for your perusal (check the Company thread for the sheet.) Since you're going for more a roleplaying thing than a min-max thing, I only made him 7th level (Rog3/Ftr4). His first three levels were Rogue (to represent his time as "an idle rich noble"), followed by the four levels of Ftr (to represent his training at Uncle Assmonkey's hands). The feats that I gave him were as follows (since we're having some boggles printing the 2nd page of HeroForge file): - Dodge
- Mobility
- Spring Attack
- Improved Initiative
- Mounted Combat ('cause of the horseman training by the uncle)
- Weapon Focus (longsword)
- Weapon Specialization (longsword).
His gear is as follows: - Longsword +1
- Chainmail +1
- Lt Wooden Shield +1
- Amulet of Health +2
- Everlasting Rations
- MW Shortbow with 20 arrows
- 3x potions of cure light
- 1x potion of cure moderate
- light warhorse with a military saddle
- and 15 gold pieces.
Let me know if you want something to change...
