Some questions directed at GM: - Is this a complete reboot with totally new characters and the like? How much of the events of the previous game (not the Law brothers, but the other one set in Santa Fe with Doc Cross, Bub, & co.) actually transpired?
- Any special character creation stuff we need to take into account?
- Are we going to begin with the posse already formed (hopefully with a reason to stick together) or what?
I'm toying with the idea of playing an actual lawdog of some sort, perhaps a US Marshal (heh. Last name of Givens, perhaps?), but knowing magman always plays a gunslinger gives me slight pause...

I was thinking about 1 yr after the previous events...I have an idea that you could keep your old characters, or there is enough room to bring in some new ones.

Groovy. Now I've got to see if I actually still have a copy of Doc Cross...
Addendum: I do have a copy of Doc Cross.
Question: You do realize that he owns a mansion now, right?

Quick follow-up: I was thinking, it would probably be for the best if I go ahead and retire Dr. Cross and create a new character simply because Cross is really advanced - it'd be like playing a 6th or 7th level character while everyone else plays a 1st level. Maybe he's now the mayor (who has no tolerance for squatters in his city) or the patron of the PCs or something.

I was thinking patron...that would work best I think...but he didn't win mayor...just so you know.

But that's okay, because if you recall, we jokingly remarked that he (and the girlfriend) are ultimately doomed to be shot to death in front of their young son outside the theater so he will dedicate his life to wreaking vengeance on crime.

For others' reference, my current choices are: - Lo Wang — womanizing Japanese ninja
- Pepi — Mexican gadgeteer w/ "talking" donkey
- Bub Twitch — "Wolverine" mountain-man/trapper
- David Mulder — (non-crazy) Civil War soldier
No leanings, ATM. Might do something else entirely, depending on where everyone else ends up

It would really help, I think, if we knew exactly what kind of game the GM is planning on running. Is it monsters around every corner? Stealth monsters, who show up infrequently because really, humanity is worse than anything hell could throw out? Etc.
Right now, I'm thinking of playing a sort of dedicated monster hunter, sort of like Dean Winchester on Supernatural but without the whiny emo crap, or Gabriel Knight. That sort of thing but ideally without the Blessed angle (probably the Demon Hunter archetype from Lost Angels but with some tweaks) But I'm equally interested in playing a lawdog of some sort if monsters are gonna be pretty rare.

Please gawd think on it. I'd hate it if you played something you didn't enjoy.
Heck...my wife played a "Madam" in this campaign.
@previous posse: This will be a reboot. All new characters, but I think you'll like it, I promise.
@mcn: Sam was a little advanced for what I'm planning, but honestly, I think for you, we could just draw up a character and make a few copies. Gunslinger. All the way, and I have no problem with that. I've been planning on more "Call Outs" for you in the next adventure.
@phl: This first one will be some investigation with combat. Some weirdness, but not BOLD weirdness like a werewolf or something.
@jsh: Awesome. Need something arcane. lol
@dan: I'd love to see Pepi again, but I worry about "Level". Maybe a "Rethinking" of him. I'd still give you the exploding bullets, and you have the plans for the wagon, but it was "Blowed up". Also, what other plans did you have?
Um...is that everybody?

OK, with that in mind, I think I'm likely to do the Demon Hunter from "Lost Angels" with some tweaks. Even though the Reckoning wasn't that long ago, I know I've read references to other weird shit having existed before it, so I'm thinking this character will be from a long line of "shadow hunters" (Schattenjäger, in the German.)
Unfortunately, this line of work doesn't really pay all that well and most people look askance at someone like him, so he'll have another job (I'm thinking undertaker, simply because that would be an awesome cover.)
Likely "portrayed" by Jensen Ackles (yeah, I'm mixing Gabriel Knight and Supernatural. Bite me.)
Addendum: If Pepi is aware of the weirdness, then we could also work in a tie between our characters as my PC has gone to Pepi in the past to get something ... special created (to deal with some sort of troublesome critter.)

Can I get some more background info about Blood City and its place in the current social/economic/political situation... ie Where does Blood City fall with the 6 nations, with the 6 railways, with the ghost rock, etc etc... It will really help me figure out a character to make... Also, BOLD weirdness? What's that? I just need much more flavor info in order to get a solid grasp as to the setting we'll be in to figure out what a character should be, etc etc

The location. Its Santa Fe. Blood City is sort of like calling New York "Gotham."

Sort through the "Previous Deadlands Stuff" sub-category here. There's a map of Santa Fe, at least, and all the characters. Maybe a synopsis in there somewhere.
"Fistful of …What the Hell Is That?" is the next in line, and I don't think there's much there.

Sorry about the confusion. "welcome to blood city" was just the name of this adventure. Sorry.
It will be taking place in Santa Fe, NM.
November of 1877.
The Civil War is still going on, and currently, NM is southern controlled.
As far as wierdness is concerned, I'm referring to having the big bad nasty be up front about wether or not he's a demon. (Trust me...it's come up.)
Most of the things you will be fighting will be human. Some wierdness sprinkled on for flavor.

Okay, I'm taking a stab at this and throwing out some character ideas-
1. Lily Carson- Talented actress who frequently haunts the local saloons/opera houses (if there are opera houses...if not, you get the idea). When she's not performing she has the ability to get information for people who are willing pay for it. Loosely based on Madam Vestal who used her charm to get battle secrets from Union solders by getting them drunk and then sold the information to the confederate army. Besides her natural talent to charm and putting on a good act, her other abilities are focused around gambling, drinking, and being a socialite. A girl can't be too careful so she isn't too bad with a gun either.
2. Abigale Raeburn- Abby was raised by her horse crazy father so naturally she learned how to ride before she could walk. She has spent most of her life in the saddle, tending the horse farm and looking after the wild mustangs that thrive on their land. When Abby was old enough she was given a chance to tame a mustang and so she was able to obtain her own mount, a skewbald she named Harlequin. Soon after she was signed on with a traveling show (think of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show) where she because a trick rider and marksman. Basically if you can think of it, she can do it on a horse.
So yeah those are my two concepts so far. I haven't really read much into the mechanics/background story of the campaign so if anyone thinks one would work better than the other I would appreciate the input.

Currently, there are 4 large theaters in Santa Fe, and a multitude of smaller ones. As for political intrugue, there is a lot of it going on in Santa Fe, especially with the recient power vacuum.
And the "Annit Oakly" idea is good as well, but don't get to attached to horses...they die like flies around these parts....
Both ideas are very good and well within the theme.
Good Job...you get a red chip.

Thinking that I'm gonna start out with an Enemy ... he was my brother or dad who got infected or bitten by something we were hunting, so I put him down (per his request.)
And then, he came back, meaner and evil.

Dug up Pepi's (Pepito Villatoro Borrayo + Tavo) sheet today. If you're liking that one best, we'll need to tally up the points, and find where to scale him back. I don't recall playing him for very long, so I suspect it won't be too hard.
I still have the notebook with his designs in it, BTW. Don't think we ever actually got to the wagon.

Here ya go, Mike. Lemme know if something doesn't work. (This will double as my Veteran of the Weird West background.)
Christian James Knight. 1st-generation American, his father, Wilhelm, was a wealthy Prussian "shadow hunter" long before the Reckoning even transpired and was from a long line of such hunters. Prior to his departure from Prussia at the age of 38, Wilhelm had already enjoyed a successful career as witch hunter or Schattenjäger as they were known. Unfortunately, he was a bit overzealous in his duties which resulted in him being directly responsible for the death of young man who had a very powerful family. Fleeing Prussia with only the clothes on his back, Wilhelm changed his name to "William Knight" and emigrated to the United States where he intended to start over.
From a very young age, following the mysterious death of their mother, Christian was groomed to follow in his father's footsteps alongside his younger brother, Frederick. Together, the three Knights traveled throughout the United States, fighting what Wilhelm insisted were "monsters" although Christian honestly thought they were simply psychotics or evil men. In 1863, though, on his 15th birthday (July 3), everything changed and somehow, Wilhelm knew it. Two days later, on July 5th, Christian knew it too when the rapist and sadist they were hunting survived killing blows and ... unleashed unnatural abilities upon them. Young Frederick died, his head torn from his body, and Christian was nearly killed as well. Only Wilhelm's prowess and his use of an amulet that had been in their family for generations kept them alive, although the bastard escaped.
For the next twelve years, Christian and his father hunted the murderer who had killed Frederick, fighting the good fight along the way. More often than not, though, they arrived too late and the trail went cold for many years. Two years ago, it brought them to Santa Fe and they finally found justice for young Frederick, but at a heavy cost. Wilhelm, who was now entering his late 60s, was very badly injured, and it took months for him to recover, during which time Christian had to find employment. Out of necessity, he became an undertaker thanks to his skill sets. As his father recovered, Christian grew to see Santa Fe as home and decided that he was done with the shadow hunting business.
But, of course, it wasn't done with him. Less than six months ago, he discovered a hideous truth: his father had not survived the fight with Frederick's murderer, but had instead died and returned as ... something else. By the time Christian discovered this fact, it was too late and his father had vanished. Investigation have revealed that Wilhelm is still somewhere in the Santa Fe area, so Christian broke out the crossbow and other implements he'd hoped to never use again.
Because now, he's got to find Wilhelm. And kill him.
ETA: Regarding the character's "worst nightmare", I'm thinking that its going to involve Christian dreaming that his brother, Frederick comes back as an undead monster and joins with his father ... and then, the two turn to Christian and rip his face off, revealing that he too is a monster underneath.

Okie dokie. After giving it some thought I think I'll start off with Lily as my primary and have Abby on reserve in case Lily croaks. A more detailed back story to follow...

Quick concept... will get detailed later...
Primary: Mad Scientist, obsessed with 'SCIENCE'.. cliche in that he hopes to rule the world on day! (unless we are playing the good guys (tm) in which case I need to figure out how to make a good mad scientist, as it lends itself to be more megalomaniac than altruistic
Secondary: Cowpoke, think 'Mongo' from 'Blazing Saddles'
Thoughts?
