John Hanning IV
"Crackerjack"
Prefers to go by Jack to distinguish himself from his father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Born to an aristocratic family with whom he never really felt like he fit in. From a young age his father took him onto their land to hunt, he could never hold a rifle properly, for he was too weak, but he could hold a pistol. He worked constantly at improving his shooting, but even that did not impress his father.
Jack was an exceptional student and eventually attended Cambridge. Though his primary study was in History, he began to discover occult teachings. A man in the library saw the young man pouring over these ancient teachings and struck up a conversation with Jack. They became fast friends. This was new for Jack who had always been awkward and withdrawn, much to his family's chagrin.
One day the man revealed that he was something called a "huckster" and told him that jack would be a promising pupil. The rest of his college career was spent working on games like poker and chess as much as studying "proper" subjects, yet he still managed to graduate with honors.
Once he graduated he found he no longer wanted to stay in England. He spent a few years abroad, honing his craft and learning as much about the world as possible. Eventually he came to America and on a lark joined the circus. He spent his days shooting playing cards, coins and the like for the Yanks amusement. It was in the circus that he was given the nickname "Crackerjack" by the owner of the circus because he was a crackerjack shot. Then one day, only a month or two after he joined the circus, someone handed him a dime novel and he was hooked.
He headed south and west. Gambling, shooting, and all manner of strange happenings whispered about. It was a dream come true. One slight misstep in Louisiana aside, it was a pretty good experience. After Louisiana, he had to head further west to Santa Fe where the next chapter of his life is about to begin.
