The previous pot-luck party concept is just too unfocused for me to work with, so I'm switching things up a bit. Let's try a fresh start, with a new party concept. Some of the previous character-concepts will carry over easily enough. Character Knowledge- Recruited for an unspecified job, by an unknown agent, for an unknown purpose—Ref: Ronin
- Given an "un-refusable offer" to do the job (see below)
- Recruited separately, with no prior knowledge (necessary?) of the others in the group
Player Knowledge- Alien invasion/apocalypse scenario
- Takes place in Chicago—heavily urbanized
- Recruited for a purpose that is "scientific" in nature, involves theoretical mathematics/physics, will be extremely hazardous, and will involve some B&E/Espionage
- Megacorp/Gov't/Espionage smell to the operation
Character Specifics- Background "ET" experience wouldn't hurt, but not required
- A history/beef with [target company] wouldn't hurt, but is not required
[/color][/li][li]Need a specific "un-refusable offer" that would keep the character working on the job when the world's gone to hell, or willing to inject themselves with unknown substances at the employer's insistence, or break federal or local laws—does not need to be a "good thing" either (could involve threats or hostages)[/li][li]Ideally, each character would be a "professional," and have a specific specialty to bring to the job, but I expect a bit of overlap; some suggestions include urban survival, engineering, B&E, surveillance/traffic-analysis/spy-stuff, others?[/li][li]Chosen archetypes will determine what sort of game-focus will be employed[/li][li]Mag7Samurai concept still a good idea, but not strictly enforced—roles need not relate to the mission-specialty[/li][/ul]Side note: I pretty much intend for N8 to keep the "scientist" character, and be the party lead-man, though it is up for discussion if somebody wants to switch-up. Tentative: N8 | Scientist-type | Josh | Spy-type | ShLE | Cop/Detective | Rigil | Noqed (Soldier) | McN | BA (Soldier) | SQ | ? | ChrisIII | B&E/Thief |

Tentatively considering the "spy".

I'm thinking about switching it up and playing a cop (irish of course), probably member of SWAT so that could cover surveillance/urban survival since they would know the area so well.

Will stick with Noqed.
Perhaps was part of initial assault wave, ala Battle: LA.
Likely to revolve around family, whether they're being held as hostages or did something naughty themselves. I could see him being AWOL, perhaps looking for the family and turning to whomever is providing the job for assistance.
Will adjust character as necessary.

Perhaps was part of initial assault wave, ala Battle: LA. No, that won't work. That hasn't happened yet. I'm thinking about starting with some pre-invasion stuff first, now, anyway—not decided yet. Will adjust character as necessary. As far as mission-specialties go, he doesn't need to change that much; the mission will need "security." That said, personally, I think being part of a PMC works better than active-duty military in this instance, but I'm not going to push that one on you. Also, you may as well incorporate BA in any of your backstory stuff, if there's a place for him. Tentatively considering the "spy". Jack Bauer, James Bond (current), Chuck? I'm thinking about switching it up and playing a cop (irish of course), probably member of SWAT so that could cover surveillance/urban survival since they would know the area so well. Nobody really needs to be from Chicago, if that's what you were thinking (though there's no reason you could not be)—this is a bit of a different situation. I didn't say anything about an "investigator" before, but that works well here too—in this case, an ex-police detective with a strong knowledge of forensics, for instance. But that depends on how you want the game to play.

Ah. Then I'm thinking he's ex-military, perhaps a medical or psych, since he'll likely have flashbacks & nightmares due to PTSD discharge. Perhaps BA is in such an organization and has recently recruited him? Even though he's got a psych discharge? Served alongside him perhaps, but BA left the Army following initial Iraq invasion, so John didn't see him until after the mess that led to his (John's) departure from the military. Then, just as things were getting really tight financially (no job, skills that don't translate well, PTSD), BA reappeared with a job offer?

Eh, it would make sense for the character to be from Chicago. And since we have some military guys already you would really need a SWAT officer so I could play the detective, though having her be ex-SWAT before she got promoted wouldn't hurt. (though now that I think about it, I don't know if women can qualify to be on SWAT teams, I'll have to look into it ). Anyway, They would have to be a homicide detective to incorporate the forensic angle. The "un-refusable" offer would probably be these guys had kidnapped my character's partner of x many years and she's trying to save them.

For the record, I just brought up the "bad offer" so it would be on the table. It could just as easily be something "good"—bringing the folks in from the mother-country and fast-tracking them to citizenship; clearing up past criminal records; answers to some great, nagging question—even just money. It's all about the characters' motivation, whether they are more strongly motivated by positive or negative means. As long as it gets the job done—that is, keeps them focused on the mission during the mess-to-come.

Well my first thought was that this company'faction/agency...thing would offer my character an elevated position at the FBI. If she does this mission then she can make it into the "big leagues" but then I didn't think it was incentive enough to continue to fight a bunch of aliens. Of course fighting aliens could appeal to her sense of 'protect the innocent' and all that and we would have a true do-gooder paragon on our hands. Which might be kinda fun to play...

Jack Bauer, James Bond (current), Chuck? Haven't decided yet, but out of those three probably James Bond. I guess it will depend on character point amount and group need.

psst! if you go with James Bond you can make the case that you'll need a Aston Martin DBS to go with your character...just a thought

psssstt... if you go with Jack Bauer, you can make the case that questionable interrogation techniques should be a free action

I ddin't think about FBI—that could work just as well. I have a gut-reaction that she should be ex-FBI, trying to get her job back; not sure if an active agent would be doing an under-the-table job like this—same thing I was thinking for Rigil. Again, don't let me decide for you… Incidentally, the same applies to Josh: he could be a "burned spy" (like you-know-who) trying to get his job back.

Just to make things clear I figured I would start her off at a regular police agency doing homicides...she's good at what she does which would cause agency X to approach her and say hey kid, we like your potential, why don't you come do this job for us and we'll make sure you get a position as an FBI agent when you're through. That way she would believe them by thinking "well its the FBI, they do under the table stuff all the time, right?"

ok...i know this will come as a surprise...but i'm thinking about the rogue/b&e guy... once again, heralding back to a hudson hawk type concept...either going to jail and offered the "xXx" deal by "the company" to assist, or already in jail and given the possibility of freedom if he helps

Still need to hear from SQ on this one.
I'm to the point in the process, now, that I need to start getting the character basics nailed down. Rigil has stats already, barring adjustments, and McN has his Dispensables character that needs to be trimmed back. Other than those two, I need to start getting some basic stats, at least, so I know what we're dealing with.
FYI, I'm thinking of doing a 2-part "prequel" run to sort out the character issues—my plan is to do this after M&M, providing we get the characters fleshed out & settled by then.

From what I can understand, it seems we will be doing a primary 'hack and slash' type campaign... like dispendables with aliens instead of terrorists... is that correct? If so, I will probably also do a scaled back dispendable character... with heavy points into pistols and SMGs or somesuch... if I am incorrect, then I will have to see how I am wrong to figure out how I will build my character

From what I can understand, it seems we will be doing a primary 'hack and slash' type campaign... The "Freeman" character concept was just fine, and is still valid—subject to the conditions mentioned earlier in this thread. Yes, it will be more hack-n-slash that I typically do, but not quite so much as Dispensables (which is all hack-n-slash). I'm also retracting my initial "no plot but what you bring with you" declaration, as it will now have a "mission"—though it will still be pretty free-form, and comba/action will still be a large part of it all (ultimately, though, this actually depends on the sort of characters everyone wants to play—if everyone wants to do less combat-oriented characters, I may work around that aspect).

The "Freeman" character concept was just fine, and is still valid—subject to the conditions mentioned earlier in this thread. I fully plan on sticking with the 'Freeman' concept, just not sure where I am going to dump point until I figure out the campaign all the way.. ie should I dump that one extra CP into more pistol skill or thick glasses proficiency sounds like I should be focusing most points into combat-related stuffs

sounds like I should be focusing most points into combat-related stuffs Not necessarily. The point of the Science! guy is to have the Science! covered, though in this case, not to the exclusion of combat ability—he will need to be able to fight.

I will try and come up with the background for my guy. Though, since I am working on my game at the same time, it may not come swiftly. And even though its not my first choice I may have to come up with the background and let you create the character. Once my campaign is over and while we are doing the prequel stuff I can make adjustments as necessary. All this depending on if iit's okay with you, of course.

For motivation for the character I think it could either be threatening to "burn" him or perhaps threatening to reveal to his girlfriend (one of only a few people he has ever let get close to him) his dark secret. Namely that the character killed her father, a drug lord, as part of an assignment.

Sorry again This just isn't working. Too busy at work these days to devote myself to "the usual" sort of campaign. You guys weren't getting particularly excited about this one anyway. So, slight change of plans. Earthfall is still on the table, as it were, but I'm going to let it simmer for a while—just not doing it "next." In the meantime, I've decided to promote The Dispensables to "real" campaign. This will involve some structural changes, and a little character work, but not much—I'll shoulder most of that burden, so all you'll end up doing is a bit of "adaptation" for the existing character troupe. Details in The Dispensables section. Stick with me, here—your patience will be rewarded
