Mr. Henry Valentine former small land and slave owner near Jefferson City Missouri . Owning less than the twenty slave exemption during the war was conscripted into the ranks of the confederate army leaving behind a wife and son to oversee the affairs of the farm. Several months into being conscripted and seeing both confederates and union men and boys dying all around. fearing for his family Henry deserted. Upon his return found his farm burned, wife and son murdered. One of his slaves lived long enough to tell him that they were union deserters (about ten) along with a couple of there names.
