wish list -
feeling like armor is more of a burden than a help...mardak will be looking for the following
- items of prot or natural armor - cha or int buff items - TBD
also, at some point i'll want to find another master work elven thinblade to replace the rapier i currently have as my second weapon
potential wish list item ... Monk's Belt

I guess for me to give an opinion I will have to know the general path you want to take your character. What are some of his goals or who do you want your character to be when he "grows up". There are many different swashbuckler builds so it hard to give an opinion without some direction.

i'm looking towards the fact that the curse isn't going to go away, so instead of relying on armor he's going to rely more on his agility and skill (duelist) essentially like the dread pirate roberts character from princess bride (but with out the pirate aspect due to the character not liking the sea) maybe even someday teach at the fighting school...

Maybe it is b/c I haven't read up on your character as much as I should....
but why eschewing armor?

The Duelist prestige class: Canny Defense (Ex) When not wearing armor or using a shield, a duelist adds 1 point of Intelligence bonus (if any) per duelist class level to her Dexterity bonus to modify Armor Class while wielding a melee weapon. If a duelist is caught flat-footed or otherwise denied her Dexterity bonus, she also loses this bonus.

GM question - does it mean all forms of armor (including items of prot or natural armor) or just the traditional armor?

Just traditional armor. Bracers of armor or Amulets of Natural Armor are okay.

If you're planning on going into duelist, that means you need to start getting into duels, so we need to figure out a way for that to happen. Duels are not fights wherein the other PCs get involved, but rather Mardak v One Other Person, to a certain percentage of HP or to the death or for a set amount of time.

Regular fights where the PCs are operating as a group to beat up thugs or monsters or the like don't classify as "duels." If you piss off Lord Knowitall and he challenges you to meet him with swords at dawn, that's a duel.

ok...then i'm ok with that...maybe a couple of lost fights cause me to work on my sword skills...and the "paragon" levels would be me trying to figure out the best way to do that?

I think you misunderstand what I meant for this. As it stands, Mardak is the character I have the least amount of filler material for at the moment. Aria has her desire to elevate her House and live up to the honor of her family name and then the possibility of her being courted by Sir Galad (even if neither of them will admit that is the case), Jareth has a billion things going on up to and including seizing power to become an iron-fisted tyrant (don't deny it, WxMAN! You know this to be true. ), and Val has his ninja assassination/espionage missions. But Mardak ... all I've currently got for him is sword-training and researching dad (which leads to another question: how?) So with the fact that you're planning on heading for duelist and his focus on swordsmanship, it seems logical to presume that he would get into some duels pretty frequently. Now the reasons for these duels are up to you. You could piss off a noble on accident (or on purpose), you might end up being the Second for a friend who then chickened out and didn't show so you have to step up, you might do the judicial champion, etc. This was mostly intended to create additional filler bits for Mardak as well as potential plot threads. Does that make sense?

yes it does...duels to defend the honor of my sister's house/honor...not sure what a judicial champion is...can see the possibility of being the "champion" of aria's house...as it is probably looked down upon for the lady of the house to fight?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trial_by_combatStill don't think you're quite getting it. If you're going to be a duelist, you need to get into duels. You need to piss people off so they will challenge you to duels—or some of those other things mentioned. "Why" is irrelevant—this is just an excuse—but nobody is making a fuss about House Devreux right now. Just like Val—can't be an "assassin" without assassinating some folk

I'd consider very carefully how you approach that with her... Mardak is on thin ice with Aria as it is and currently doesn't want you associating yourself openly with the house due to the whole demon/curse thing... Also, as this is a 'fantasy land' normal gender roles don't necessarily apply, furthermore - Mardak would be wise to keep the idea of "defending her house/honor" to himself for now as it is (in her mind) HER house, and to claim you need to defend it is inferring she can't... and right now I think Aria could kick all our asses combined... Jareth has a billion things going on up to and including seizing power to become an iron-fisted tyrant (don't deny it, WxMAN! You know this to be true. )

ahhh...like 3 musketeer's ...gotcha No, the Musketeers were the king's elite guard. What would be a good example?… Still…not relevant. Duelist needs to duel. GM needs an excuse to get you into duels, or you need to make those duels happen, yourself. this is just an attempt to get the character in a position to get into duels on a semi-regular basis. Potential excuses that have been mentioned: - Judicial champion—dueling for legal purposes, at the direction of the magistrate
- Pissing off nobles, and getting challenged
- Befriending someone who pisses off nobles, and needs a second to fight for him
- Underground fight-club—fighting for the entertainment of others
- Combination of the above

i think i'll lean away from defending the honor and more like stir up trouble...only thing i wonder is ...how would that work in actual combat I would probably try to find a fight club somewhere in the more seedier places of town. I would ask around or get Jareth to help you (though this might come at a price). I wouldn't just randomly go looking for trouble. We already have plenty of enemies around town. Also I wouldn't go ticking off nobles. They are the ones with allies and power so it would be easy to get in over your head. And I need to point out that Aria is trying to improve her relationship with the nobles so that she can uphold her family's honor. Having a half-brother looking for trouble isn't going to help that, so if she finds out about it, she will probably put a stop to it. Furthermore, can't this be a 'spar' event? Like he can do some duels at Orinsini's?

i think i'll lean away from defending the honor and more like stir up trouble...only thing i wonder is ...how would that work in actual combat How would what work in actual combat? I don't understand what you mean by this. Partially related - I think I mentioned this to you via chat a while back, but I figured I should get it in "writing" - while at the Orisini Fighting Academy, Mardak is paired off with a young woman named Delilah. She’s pretty darned good with her sword - daring, even - and is cocky like all good swashbucklers should be. Del - that’s the name she goes by - also does quite a bit of flirting with Mardak during their pseudo-duels. The senior instructor here at the academy - Dengaro - clearly doesn’t like seeing this. At all. He hasn't said or done anything about it yet, but it's obviously only a matter of time. Good thing you guys are heading out on a boat "tomorrow" (in game terms), huh?

Oh great, I forgot about the boat. Its that time during the campaign where the GM gleefully flips to the "water" section of the monster manual. The section that has three inches of dust on it because it never gets used. Which is why if you're on a boat...you're gonna get jumped
