It is whatever you want to do. You said you were looking at character development...so...develop your character. If you think he has more of a throw caution to the wind attitude then maybe he goes looking for duels at a fight club. Maybe he wants to train at the academy because he respects Orisini's instruction and wants to improve as much as possible under his guidance. Hell, maybe Del gets into something and needs a second. You could be her backup and thus strengthening your relationship with her. He's your character so you chose the path he should take. Then talk it over with our illustrious GM and then you work together to make it happen. We have someone in our party who is trying to be a Disney villain so nothing is unattainable.

would i only being doing duels at the academy... I don't understand why you aren't understanding… This is no different than playing a "gunslinger" in Deadlands (or any Old West setting). With the party, he shoots things just like everyone else, but he's not "playing his role" as gunslinger if he's not getting into an occasional showdown with other solo gunslingers, outside the party. This is a meta-game condition, and has nothing to do with the character's motivation—he might not even want to, in-character—but if it doesn't happen, he's not really a gunslinger; he's just another "fighter." Same thing here. The GM is just trying to work out ways to get Mardak into some one-on-one duels, with the player's direction, so he can be worthy of the title, "duelist." The character needs to find himself in trouble; what sort of trouble do you prefer?

Just so. Consider "swashbucklers" we've seen in other fiction. They're always getting into duels, sometimes because they pick a fight and sometimes because they happen to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time. It also depends on the character - is he a party fiend? A hard drinker? Since he grew up with pirates ... er ... freelance acquisitions experts, then does he tend to always look for the low dives? Or is he trying to be the Good Brother (tm) and only visits upper tier drinking establishments? Apart from swordplay, what does he do in his off-time? Given that he's a PC and a swashbuckler (and then later, an actual duelist), we can almost presume that he gets into a lot of off-screen duels with low-level, nameless flunkies from time to time, but we want to focus on the Big Ones.
In game terms, look at how Giger did the assassination side mission. He stated to me "need a mission from my contact" and we figured it out from there. What you could do is, in between sessions (and during sessions as well, providing there is "down time") is to declare simply that you've had some duels. Then we can figure out the circumstances and results.
For example, imagine that you declare "Hey, Mardak had an important duel. He had a little too much to drink and got into an argument with a noble who challenged him to a duel." From there, we would work out the specifics and could even potentially play out the duel either here on the boards or during the game.
I'm just trying to keep everyone involved in the game so it doesn't turn into the Jareth show which I suspect WxMAN appreciates since it gets tiring to always be expected to be The Proactive Player. What? Why, yes, I am speaking from experience...

ok ... so, my brain hurts a lil today...but a couple of quick thoughts... does the city know that Aria is my sister? if not then i'll probably be visiting both upper and lower tier establishments ... in an attempt to try and find info about my parentage as well as get info/general feelings about house starkweather/devareaux (sp?) ...think i'll primarily "pick fights" at the dives just for the lesser possibility of disrespecting a Noble...however, the nice thing about frequenting the upper tier is that maybe i can come to the aid of a noble in an attempt to "make friends in high places" but keeping with my "roots" by visiting the dives to help get info and "practice"

does the city know that Aria is my sister? As far as I know (which could be wrong) no one knows you are Aria's brother except for the party and maybe some special plot NPCs... Aria and Jareth (both) would prefer to keep it that way until you have fully determined the character's personality/faults. And I know for sure Aria wouldn't want her house name to be spoiled by someone running around getting into fights for funsies. If you start becoming more of a troublemaker Aria will surely want you removed from the house completely, while if you start doing good deeds and being generally more heroic-like she'd most likely want to allow you full access tot he house and maybe even let it be well known... I'm not telling you all this to tell you what to do, as this is your character and it is up to what YOU want. However, every choice you make has consequences. Jareth being manipulative? He'll gain enemies (as we're seeing now)... Val assassinating folks? There will be people coming if he messes up (either the murder or if he is spotted doing it)... Aria being a BDH? People who do not want heroes or have something to lose from Aria's good deeds will try and remove or corrupt her... Mardak becomes more heroic? Aria likes him more and potentially lets opens the house to him... but you'll have gain powerful enemies with people of the more evil persuasion Mardak becomes more neutral/evil? Aria will distance herself from him and you may get powerful heroes/villians knocking on your door to kill you.... but you may gain power/fame/money/chicks/dudes/whatever your poison is Also keep into mind your strengths/weaknesses when it comes to how you wish to accomplish your goals.... Jareth wouldn't start fights to gain fame/power just as Val wouldn't use social engineering to assassinate folks... If you aren't good at something, find someone who is and work out a deal... If you are good at something, someone will probably need those talents and will offer something in return

That is how I've been approaching it. Those that you know are aware of the sibling relationship is limited to a literal handful - the PCs and your adopted father, who is now dead.

so....if no one knows that we're related i can possibly "pick fights" to gain status based on my ability with a sword...not saying I'll be going around causing problems...but maybe "sticking my nose where it doesn't belong" type deals...hear an argument that's building and offer my services as a second or to take their place
thoughts?

That's fine, just don't expect Aria to appreciate it and she'll probably disown you if you start causing problems or getting into a lot of fights.. Also, I would consider being CN if you are going more that route as I doubt "good" characters cause issues like that

I only partially agree with that. If the fights he gets into are honorable ones - e.g., he sees a guy picking on a bard or a halfling or a "lady of negotiable affection" and he gets involved, I wouldn't classify that as CN but rather a perfect example of CG since he's watching out for the the little guy. If he just randomly picks fights, though, that's certainly CN.
Easiest solution to this - and I still don't quite understand what the disconnect is - would be (at first) for Mardak to just be in the wrong place at the wrong time. We'll deal with this as it pops up.

He must bite his thumb at them, which is a disgrace to them, if they bear it
