Born Eliza Wilson, Eliza was a just a small-town girl growing up on the outskirts of town. Her family, part of the stable middle class, owned and operated a mill. No stranger to hard work, Eliza grew up helping her family business. She was mostly overshadowed by her older brother who was the pride and joy of her parents. He was also dumber than a box of rocks and wouldn't take anyone with a lick of common sense to know that Eliza was more than capable to run the family business. Even so, she was largely neglected as a child, and so grew up isolated with nothing more than her books and thoughts for company. But that was okay, because she still had friends in unusual places. She raised her dog Rowdy from when he was a scrawny pup and now he follows her everywhere. She was intrigued with smithing and metal working, and so hung around the town's smithy. Eventually she became so much of a bother that the resident blacksmith taught her how to make nails for horseshoes. She had a natural talent and was working hard to get her fill of it. Eventually she was considered an "off the books" apprentice.
Unfortunately, her older brother was killed by being kicked in the stomach by a horse. If only he were kicked in the head, he may have had half a chance of surviving, for nothing important resided up there. By that time, Eliza was growing up to be a opinionated and headstrong young lady. She had little desire to take over the family business, as she much preferred her time at the smithy. Not sure what to do with Eliza, her father arranged for her to be married to a city boy, born and raised south of town.
Eliza could still remember the haze of smoke of the room and the hear the dulcet tones of the singer as she met her soon to be betrothed. The smell of cheap perfume burned her nose as she looked at his hard eyes and grim demeanor. She had heard the rumors swirling around this man about not treating women right or proper. Not to mention his gambling habit. He would pay anything to roll the dice just one more time. So she made up her mind in that very moment that she needed to leave.
Under the cover of darkness she and Rowdy disappeared into the night. The only thing she took was the thing that would place her in a prison of her father's making; her dowry. She got to town and started walking the streets passing the strangers waiting up and down the boulevard. Seeing their shadows gave her an idea. She needed a new start and a new name. She couldn't stop believing that a good life was out there for her. And so, at the stroke of midnight, Cassidy Cade took the train going anywhere but here.
